Mi vecino Muhammad

Interesante y cortito artículo publicado no hace mucho en La Presse bajo el nombre Immigration - Algerians top of list... (Al menos en Québec los chinos no son la mayoría de inmigrantes)

"During the first half of 2006 Algeria nudged out China as the leading country of origin of new immigrants to Québec. North African newcomers are young, qualified and speak French — just the type of people targeted by the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles du Québec (MICC).

There are significant differences in Québec immigration figures from one year to the next. From January to July 2006, Québec welcomed 20,519 immigrants. Of this number, 10.8% were Algerian, 7.6% were French and 6.4% hailed from Morocco.

In 2005 China was the leading country of origin of newcomers, followed by France. The opposite was true in 2004. Between 2001 and 2005, over 35,000 North Africans, mainly Algerians and Moroccans, but also Tunisians, decided to put down new roots in Québec. North African immigrants thus outnumbered newcomers from China (18,749) and France (16,273).

Québec hopes to welcome 48,000 immigrants in 2007, especially qualified young people who speak French — typical characteristics of the Algerian population".
